GPS Tracking for Apple Watch for people with Dementia

Does anyone know if it's possible to track someone with Dementia who has the watch, if they wonder away from home? I'm researching the possibilities to see if I (or anyone else in my family) can track a loved one suffering from dementia who has the watch on my iPhone, in case they wander away from the house. I know there are apps available like this for tracking kids, but I'm looking to see if the Apple Watch can work independently without the phone on them. Thanks
