Missing sub-folder in Documents

Hello, I lost my Documents folder yesterday. My folder with my university work disappeared first. After updating my iCloud Drive storage my other documents have been restored. However, I have two outstanding issues that I cannot resolve:

  1. My university folder is missing from Documents and all other locations, including the trash can.
  2. Documents is ticked to be "showing" under the sidebar Preferences for Finder but, is not actually present in Finder. My Documents folder is in iCloud Drive but, I do not want to play around with settings and lose all of my documents again.

I would be grateful for some assistance. Thank you

Hey there!

Can you check iCloud.com > iCloud Drive > Documents, on any web browser? Does it also show as missing?

If so, can you check this location:

Open Finder.

On the too menu click > Go > Home.

Do you see a folder called iCloud Drive Archive?

If so, open that, the the Documents folder within, do you see the missing folder(s) there?

Typically, if you disable iCloud Drive, or sign out, you’re asked if you want to keep a copy of the data, this would be where it’s stored.

If not:

Try logging into iCloud.com in Safari or elsewhere.

Go to Account Settings.

Scroll to the bottom, and click on “Restore Files”, wait a bit, if they were stored in iCloud Drive and archived, it may appear here, and if so, you can select it, and the option to restore the file(s).

Otherwise:

Do you keep a Time Machine backup? Or use another backup service? (Including cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, etc.)?

While at iCloud.com, you could also look at:

iCloud Drive > Recently Deleted.

Hope that helps, let me know if not, or if you have a response to those other questions, typically, data doesn’t just disappear for no reason. Another question would be do you know your available iCloud Storage?

Hey again! Hope you saw my previous reply. We’re you able to find the files with those steps?

Likewise, I realized you have Documents Checked in Sidebar Preferences, what do you see when clicking on Go, (On the top menu) > Documents? Likewise, if you uncheck Documents and check it again?

I have seen shortcuts or created folders using the “Documents” name cause an issue because by default this is a directory of the OS, and possibly could confuse the system.

Anyhow, hope it worked out.

Also try this, click once on the Desktop to get Finder as the foremost app.

Click Go in the menubar and then select Go To Folder, enter this path,

~/Library/Mobile Documents

press Go.

A new Finder Window will open with the Mobile Documents highlighted.

Press and hold the Control key and click on the Mobile Documents folder

from the submenu click on Open in a New Window.

From the new window look through the folders and see if your lost items are there.
