MacBook Air from 2014 won't accept OS upgrade

According to Apple, I should be able to upgrade the OS on my MaBook Air for a while yet. It's from early 2014, and it should be ready for Catalina, Big sur, or at least Mojave, but when I try to get the process started I get messages saying that it can't be upgraded. In fact, before I even considered upgrading, I got a note telling me that the Mojave iteration (Which I had never downloaded) was corrupted and not usable. The MBA has 8GB RAM, a 500GB SSD and only 66GB of the SSD is in use. It doesn't seem as if available space for an OS upgrade would be a problem. Any suggestions?

Your hardware sounds compatible with MacOS Big Sur. But you failed to tell us your current operating system. (An interesting omission…).

If your current operating system is quite old, the upgrade process differs.

That was the right answer. I did a 100% backup, then restarted in Safe Mode, and I didn't see any of the "No upgrades allowed" notices, so I went to the App Store and was able to download Big Sur. The MBA is now running in Big Sur. Simple fix, I suppose, but I clearly hadn't thought of it. Thank you very much for the suggestion. It worked, and now I will include it in my diagnostic toolkit. I would have felt like a right boob if I'd taken the Mac to the Apple Store and that was all they had to do to fix it. Thanks.

You may have some third party software installed that is interfering (anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, third party security software -- none of which are needed on a Mac and usually causes problems). Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the upgrade will run since this disables most third party drivers and Login items. Is your Mac being managed by a school or business which may restrict your ability to download the installers?

If you already have a macOS installer downloaded (or even partially downloaded), then you should delete it and empty the Trash. macOS can be configured to download updates in the background. This will make sure a former download is not interfering as well as making sure you have the latest version of the macOS installer (very important).

The link @sberman provided includes instructions for using Software Update and the App Store (with a link to the App Store download of Big Sur). Here is another Apple article for containing links to the various macOS 10.11+ installers as well as instructions for creating an optional bootable macOS USB installer:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

You also have access to Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R) which should allow your Mac to boot to the online Big Sur installer (in theory since sometimes Macs will only boot to the online installer for the oldest OS still available for your Mac).

Make sure to have a good backup before you attempt to upgrade the OS.

I just checked the disc and got a "seems to be OK" reply. I checked my estimates of disk space, and I was off. The current disc has 119GB on it, making it slightly more than 1/4 full. Would that make a difference? How much disc space is required to install Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur? For what it's worth, the "No upgrades" notice that pops up when I try to upgrade anything does NOT look like an Apple graphic.

I looked into this issue on the forum, and, since the MBA is currently running 10.13.6 (High Sierra), it doesn't include the Software Update icon in Preferences, and upgrading must be done through the App Store. When I try that, I am presented with the "No upgrades possible..." warning, by the App Store. What could be going on? If I have to, I can back up everything on it and reformat the drive, if that would make an upgrade doable. Or should I just take it to the nearest Apple Store?
