iMessages take forever to send

So I recently started having this problem barely 3 months ago I have an I phone XR. I sent an imessage to a friend on a Friday and the message didn’t say delivered and it stayed like that for a couple of days and I know their phone wasn’t off at all and they received the message days later and it said I had sent it Friday, this has happened multiple times w this person and it started happening with other contacts as well except they don’t receive the message until hours later. I have tried sending it as an SMS as well but it doesn’t deliver at all and I tried restarting my phone and nothing, I don’t know what else to do it’s just so annoying. I’m thinking of just upgrading but I don’t know if that will fix it.

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Hi danyram20,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with iMessages being delivered. We're happy to help.

We recommend starting with number two in the steps here: If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Additionally, we'd recommend attempting to send a regular SMS text from a new thread to test. If you can't send SMS text messages to any contact, you'll want to check for a carrier update: Manually update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad

If you're not seeing an update is available, or after installing you're still unable to send an SMS text message, contact your carrier. You'll want to ensure your account is in good standing and your account is provisioned for sending SMS text messages. We recommend this as a silent SMS message is sent to help activate iMessage, and this may be the reason you're having the issue.

If the iOS running on your iPhone is out of date, be sure you create a backup before updating. If needed, the steps here can help you update: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Best!
