appleTV 4k ethernet disconnects

My AppleTV 4K says internet is not connected almost every time I go to use it. It is connected via Ethernet. There is no way to pick Ethernet as network settings just wants to pick a WiFi network.

If I reboot the AppleTV then Ethernet connects again.

There is a connection light on the Ethernet switch is on before and after reboot.

Is this a software bug or a bad Ethernet hardware?

I have reported this issue on this forum too. The Ethernet interface is "flapping" (ie connects then disconnects) constantly when it is in Sleep mode. I had the same issue when powering on the Apple TV as it would say No Internet. Rebooting the device would get a DHCP IP address. My work around was to hard code the IP address in the Network Ethernet settings. If you go into Network setting, set the Ethernet to Manual and then either assign a permanent address or keep the one your router assigned, just make sure it is set to Manual. I believe this is driver issue. You should also report this problem to Apple Feedback.

shrx4me: just looked at my switch log this morning and you can see how many times in a short time frame the Apple TV 4K is bouncing. My 4K is connected to port 3 on the switch. BTW... my 4K is the 2017 version and running latest code 14.6

I have found out more about this issue. When the Apple TV 4K is turned off for a while, the Ethernet ports goes to 100Mbps, and it also starts disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. I have also found out that even if the link is up and you power on the device, it will still not connect and show WiFI not available even though the Ethernet link is up. Only a reboot fixes it and sometimes it won't even connect at 1000Mbps (ie gigabit) but it does connect and one can use the device. This has got to be either a hardware issue with the Ethernet controller or a software problem. I have a Cisco managed switch and I can look at the logs and see the constant flapping while it is off. This is not normal behavior. My other 2 Apple TV HD devices to not have this problem. The Ethernet interface is also showing alot of CRC errors.

I would like to know if the new Apple TV 4K (2021) is experiencing the same problem? It seems that most people use the WiFi and that's why we're not seeing many complaints about Ethernet connectivity.
