Right air pod not registering when in my ear

My right AirPod will not register when it is in my ear. I have removed it from my iPhone memory several times. After reconnecting it via Bluetooth from scratch, at first it registers.

As soon as I take out the left one and put it in my ear, the right one stops working and will not reconnect even if I put it back in the case. What’s going on??
