Mail App not opening in default inbox.

When I open my mail app it opens an email within one of my folders. I tried deleting that email and it just opened in that folder where the email used to be. Long story short when I want to check my email I have to back out of that folder until I get to the all inboxes tab. It isn’t hard, but is extremely annoying. Even after switching to my all inboxes tab it still goes back to that other folder when I close and reopen the app.

Hi Peopleperson49,

Thanks for following up.

Have you taken any steps to reconfigure the email account to the Mail app, such as deleting and adding the account back? If you do this, you will want to make sure you know your hotmail login as the password will be required to set up the account again.

We understand this isn't necessarily an issue preventing you from sending email, but some of the steps in this article may be helpful for reconfiguring the mail account, specifically see the section titled 'Remove your email account and set it up again.'

If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let us know if this step is impactful at all.

Cheers!

Hi Peopleperson49,

Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities. Here to help.

We understand you're seeing an issue in your Mail app regarding an email and corresponding folder continuing to open without your prompting it to. We see how that would be a nuisance, lets see what can be done!

Firstly, is your Mac caught up on its software updates and upgrades? Falling behind here could lead to compatibility issues with third party mail accounts. The following link below will cover how to check for updates and upgrades.

How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur

Next, what type of email account is this? Is the account functioning otherwise regarding sending and receiving emails? Have you received any error messages indicating the account has connectivity issues? Knowing if the email and folder that are triggering this behavior is associated with an iCloud.com email or another provider could help us locate relevant resources.

We will provide a general resource for Mac Mail troubleshooting below, in case it can help to identify any connectivity or account configuration issues. Feel free to follow up with additional detail and we will happily assist as much as possible.
