kensington sd5700t disconnect to MacBook Pro 16"

Hi Team,

I have kensington sd5700t thunderbolt 4 dock, and when my MacBook start working on max using lots of energy, dock station disconnect. I'm using dock station as charger and I have one 5k screen connect on.

It is possible to disable port for charging where is dock connect on? Then I would use MacBook charger and not doc station charger. I don't want to have both chargers connect to computer at the same time, I think it would harm battery. Or another option is if is possible to software turn off/on charging, that my MacBook would be using only battery as a power source.

Thanks and regards

Ales

Hey,

Thank you for quick replay. Situation is like this:

In first scenario. If I'm using only MacBook 16" charger (original cable and I use only original cable for charging), I have external monitor Samsung 49" 5k and ethernet adapter. In this scenario I don't have dock connected to MacBook 16", and everything work perfectly no matter how intense work I'm doing.

AC Charger Information:

Connected: Yes

ID: 0x7002

Wattage (W): 94

Family: 0xe000400a

Serial Number: C4H108602NPPM0WAR

Name: 96W USB-C Power Adapter

Manufacturer: Apple Inc.

Hardware Version: 1.0

Firmware Version: 1080053

Charging: Yes

In second scenario I disconnect MacBook charger connect kensington sd5700t and external screen I connect to docking station. In this case I'm using only one thunderbolt port on Macbook. If I'm not doing anything intensive dock won't disconnect, I tested that for two days I was running on Mac only Safari and Slack app, It this case I none disconnection happened. Third day I was try to run also VMware Fusion, GNS3, docker and few other applications and the I saw that computer start working more intensive disconnect happened in 5min after use. I did monitor Energy impact on MacBook and I saw big spike in energy consumption, whenever that happens dock disconnect from MacBook. Charging information from dock

AC Charger Information:

Connected: Yes

ID: 0x0000

Wattage (W): 90

Family: 0xe000400a

Charging: Yes

Third my college at work test same dock with his MacBook Pro 16" and happened exactly the same, disconnections every few minutes. However I did test dock with MacBook 12" retina (2015), with MacBook 13" (2019) and Surface 4 laptop, with all those laptops dock station work OK not a single disconnection happened and I was using at least 10 hours dock with laptop.

I did measure energy consumption on laptops and not max consumption I saw with Surface laptop and it was 58W, other laptops had lover consumption.

I know I could have connect both chargers to laptop original and over dock station, but I don't wan't to damage battery.

That way I wonder if is possible to disable for example right side port from charging or if is possible to disable charging at all and I would use on battery power source?

P.S. I did test dock station on all 4 ports and same results on all of them.

Maybe you have some solution or test for that I could do.

Thanks and regards

We understand, Ales.

However, you'd be unable to disable the ports on your Mac, or the charging port. In addition, while you may use your Mac with battery power, it would need to be plugged in using the port to charge the battery. If you want to reduce the energy consumption to those ports, we'd recommend reducing the number of devices plugged into your Mac. You can read more about that here: If a Mac accessory needs more power or is using too much power - Apple Support

The best course of action moving forward would be to continue to work with Kensington regarding their dock, since this seems to be the root of the behavior you're experiencing. The Mac itself doesn't appear to be the cause of the behavior, so Kensington would be best to assist here.

Kindest Regards.

Hey team,

I'a already in contact with Kensington and working on this case.

My question for you is if is possible to disable charging on right side for example. That my MacBook would charge only on left side or even if I can limit charging only on one port on MacBook?

Second question is if I can make MacBook using only battery as power source not from power adapter?

Thanks & regards

Hey there, Ales!

We appreciate you reaching out on Apple Support Communities. It sounds like the Thunderbolt 4 port on your MacBook Pro is disabled when too much energy is used on your Mac. This results in it disconnecting the dock station that you use. We’d be happy to look into this with you!

To get started, you mentioned using the charger for your Mac. If you plug your Mac in with the original charging cable, does the same behavior occur? Also, with the docking station, is it plugged into several ports on your Mac? If you’re using the dock station to also charge your Mac, does the same behavior occur when not using it to charge, but still utilize it for other items?

Also, let us know if the steps here help: If a Thunderbolt device doesn’t work with Mac - Apple Support

Cheers!
