Closed display mode is a VERY special case that only exists while you meet ALL the requirements, including power adapter connected.

I'm sorry but what has that got to do with Apple? Closed display mode requires power. Get a generator if you need power when the power goes off.
Of course the laptop has a battery. But your issue is related to using the computer in closed display mode which has specific power requirements. It requires external power.
