iPhone 4 rear camera lens question

Hey everyone,

I’ve had my iPhone 4 for about 4 weeks now, and have a question regarding the back camera lens. The glass on mine is all scratched up. It’s only the part over the camera, and not the rest of the phone. I’m not even sure how it got like this, since I don’t really keep it anywhere where it could have gotten scratched. Anyone else noticing this?

MacBook 2.4GHz, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4

No, not on mine or my wife's.

The back glass doesn't cover the (large) camera lens.

Just got off the phone with Apple. They gave me the option of sending my phone in for repair (would have it back in 3 to 5 days) or do an advance replacement. They send a new phone and hold a charge on my credit card until they get the original phone back. There's a $29.00 fee for advanced replacement. If they determine the lens damage was my fault, they will call me back and tell me my options. Even if they send my original back, fixed or not, I still get dinged for the $29.00.

Still deciding what to do.

I've been following this thread since it started because my iPhone 4 lens cover has some unsightly scratches (in contrast to the rest of the phone which is pristine after 6 weeks). Anyway, I finally decided to visit my local Apple store today. It was close to closing time, but I asked about the $29 backplate replacement. The employee confirmed that this can in fact be purchased. Unfortunately, they would could not fit me in so today so I'm going back tomorrow to get it replaced for FREE! 🙂

However, the employee did mention that the backplates are recycled from returns and broken models. I'll have to inspect the one I get to make sure it's perfect before they put it on.

So if you do have a scratched camera lens cover it CAN be replaced.

I had the same issue, where the bottom left corner (as the camera takes the picture - bottom right as you look at the back) was getting all scratched up, despite me taking great care of my iPhone. Just took it to the Apple store at International Mall and they said that while scratches are typically a cosmetic issue, they would replace the glass for me this time. Even if they wouldn't replace it, it's only $29 to have them replace it. I've now bought a vinyl wrap from dinocarbon.com to help keep the camera lens recessed from the back surface.

Hi-

Went to the Apple Store and booked with a Genius this afternoon.
(Edmonton, Canada) I showed him the phone and the scratches all over the lens cover on the back.

The genius gave me the benefit of the doubt (as I explained there were next to no scratches on the back cover) and covered the part.

The entire back cover replaced at no charge. Otherwise, I was prepared to pay for the replacement.

I switched to Apple from PC in 2007. I am satisfied with their service
and appreciation for customer loyalty. Have had some parts replaced with my Macbook Pro, which would have otherwise broke the bank.

Looking forward to using the camera again, without hazy results 🙂 Still can't understand why the camera component isn't quite flush with entire back cover though.

My camera is completely strached and has been for a few months. This is my 3 or 4th iphone and I have never had probmes. This one has been in the Otter Box since day one and Apple would not replace my phone. I am disapointed in the camera on the "4" and i have not even been able to take pictures! They said they would replace it for $30...what a rip....
