Wi-Fi auto join and connection issues

At home, I have one main router and 2 other routers used as range extenders with DHCP disabled. All iphones, one iPhone 12 and one XR, with “auto join” enabled for all routers. In the past our iPhones would connect to one of the routers, I suppose depending on the strongest signal when arriving home. With this we had issues, pre iOS 14.6 but were not terribly annoying. Now with iOS 14.6 installed the phones connect to a router and then when we move into the fringes of its range it connect to mobile data instead of the next strongest home Wi-Fi signal. We have had to turn off mobile data to conserve it whilst at home.

why is this happening now and how do we solve it? Apart from just turning off mobile data.

It seems your iPhone is connecting to cellular data while there's Wi-Fi available.


When Wi-Fi Assist is enabled your iPhone will automatically connect to cellular data when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection. Check to see if this setting is enabled, as outlined in the article below:


About Wi-Fi Assist


"Turn Wi-Fi Assist on or off 

Wi-Fi Assist is on by default. If you don't want your iOS device to stay connected to the Internet when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you can disable Wi-Fi Assist. Go to Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data. Then scroll down and tap the slider for Wi-Fi Assist."

Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points


"Auto-Join when used with wireless carrier Wi-Fi networks

Wireless carrier Wi-Fi networks are public networks set up by your wireless carrier and their partners. Your iPhone or other Apple cellular device treats them as known networks and automatically connects to them.

If you see ”Privacy Warning” under the name of your carrier's network in Wi-Fi settings, your cellular identity could be exposed if your device were to join a malicious hotspot impersonating your carrier's Wi-Fi network. To avoid this possibility, you can prevent your iPhone or iPad from automatically rejoining your carrier’s Wi-Fi network:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap  next to the wireless carrier's network.
  3. Turn off Auto-Join."
