iOS 14.6 podcast app draining battery

Everything was fine until I installed 14.6 last week. Now when using the podcast app my phone gets hot and my battery drains in a matter of hours. I used to get a couple of days out of it.

The Podcast app is also glitchy, not wanting to play a podcast and taking a long time to start playback.

I’ve restarted and uninstalled/reinstalled the podcast app a few times without improvement. Battery health is good but shows the podcast app is using all the power.

Apple Discussions is a user-to-use your knowledge sharing forum and, as you can see, we are all sharing some of the pain with the Podcasts app upgrade. The best bet is for all to submit problems and suggestions to Apple at Apple Feedback, https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-podcasts/

The iOS 14.5 & 14.6 Apple Podcasts app upgrades are still bug-ridden. I’m sorry podcast users have had to serve as guinea pigs for such flawed versions, it doesn’t make sense to invest time trying to answer questions about such an unpredictable piece of software.

On the Apple Podcasts Server side new episodes for some Shows are listed three days after they are available on TuneIn, Stitcher, SoundCloud, etc.

On the Apple Podcasts app side:

• the app gets stuck and remain in loading mode with some users when first opened,

• Episodes sometimes mark themselves as played after just a few seconds,

• some Shows do not list the most recent unplayed episodes even when the Show settings are chosen to do so.

• Station lists sometimes do not list unplayed episodes available in Show lists, even though the Station settings do not limit episodes,

• some users experience difficulty deleting episodes from lists,

• some episodes download once in Show lists, others simply do not, even the toggle for Automatic Downloads in Show settings is On,

• the app causes a heating problem and excessive battery draining, particularly when select other apps are open in the background or foreground,

• a change in key default settings in the iOS 14.5 Podcasts app upgrade caused numerous unwanted automatic downloads in Shows with tens or hundreds of episodes.

Hopefully, some heads have rolled for those responsible, clearer thinking people have replaced them and the bugs will be straightened out soon. Apple is an excellent company which has made this experience frustrate us more.

The update to the podcast app is both terrible and yes, also draining my battery. Why do they insist on breaking things that work? There were a lot of podcast I would listen to but was not subscribed to. They're all gone! I've tried to no subscribe to all of them. But yes, my battery was full a couple hours ago and now its at 10% since turning on podcasts and charging can't keep up. On a 12 Pro Max.

I am having the exact same issue. I’ve been considering moving away from iPhone after having had one since the iPhone 2. I have all things apple and have been an apple user since the year 2000. However, my iPhone 12 Pro has not made me happy. The podcast app draining my battery has all but sealed the deal in me moving away from my iPhone. I hope Apple fixes this quickly. My phone gets hot when listening to podcasts which is most of what I do on my phone. The battery is draining so quickly that if I use a slower charger while listening, battery still regreses while connected. This is unacceptable. I understand bugs and know it will likely be fixed, nonetheless; it may be time to move away from my smartphone and explore different alternatives.

This solution is not a solution. My settings were exactly as you recommended to change when the update occurred- I STILL have significant battery drain with a new phone and 99% battery health. I’ve also got the rest of the applications closed on my phone during use of my podcast app and continue to lose my entire battery charge in aprox an hour. This is a HUGE problem and costing Apple money as folks flock away to Spotify or other apps.

rhe time it takes to load all of your preferred casts to an alternate player is now worth it due to this AWFUL OVERSIGHT by Apple on the latest update. Honestly, the apple podcast player is generally the worst out there but we’ve stuck out of convenience. Whomever is in charge of podcast app- you need a new role, friend.

bye bye apple podcast - hope you get your $hit together

Me too. I thought maybe something was wrong with just my phone. I reset to factory then restored. Still having this issue w podcasts. My battery lasts less then an hour if I’m listening to podcasts and it starts jumping to different podcasts randomly. My phone gets extremely hot too.

Now that I see I’m not the only person with this issue, my hypothesis is apple wants you to think something is wrong with your phone so you buy a new one.

Its so disappointing.

Hi Apple,

I this is my first time posting, but I too am an avid user of your Podcast App running a iPhone Xs that was working fine and with the update to iOS 14.6 is now draining 50% battery in an hour with almost all of this being attributed to the Podcast App. My phone is now mostly tethered and fear for the batteries health as the phone is running extremely hot.

I hope this can be remedied.

Cheers,

I’m having the same exact issue. So bizarre. The iOS Podcast app was always a little laggy, but it wasn’t infuriating to use prior to this update. I installed the update on my iPhone 11 Pro and the change was immediately noticeable. Apple customer support had no idea what the issue was and tried to have me troubleshoot, even though it was glaringly obvious that there was a serious mistake in the programming of the Podcast update. So I just got the iPhone 12 Pro, switched to Verizon and started fresh (instead of setting up from a backup) and the issue is still just as bad on a brand new phone. Can’t imagine how this slipped through the cracks, this is a major app and seems like a glaring oversight. Please fix soon, I listen to podcasts every day!

This is 100% happening to me too. It has also taken my battery health from 99% to 94%

I have only had this 12 Pro Max since January.

Podcast app was supposed to be updated with new iOS…it only got worse and has killed my battery.

APPLE SUPPORT PLEASE HELP! (At least give us a good reply in this thread).

my phone battery is being ruined by this…on my $1200 brand new phone. :-/

I have had the exact same issue on my iPhone 12ProMax that I purchased in January.

When I first noticed the warming after the update I checked my battery health and it was still at 100% and didn’t worry.

It has only gotten worse. This morning a 25 minute podcast took my phone from full charge to 86%….that is ridiculous.

Worse yet my battery health is at 94%

This is absolutely unacceptable. I spend an hour on the phone with Apple Care and there was zero acknowledgment of the Podcast update causing issue.

I was told if my battery health hits 80% within the first year it will be replaced for free.

My brand new $1200 phone can’t handle Apples own Podcast App! This is bad.
