Is the Macbook 2020 compatible for target display with iMac 2012?

Is the Macbook 2020 compatible for target display with iMac 2012? I've tried everything and I'm unable to use my iMac as a secondary display since upgrading my Macbook to the the 2020 version. I even replaced all thunderbolt cables and adapter and still not able to detect the display. When pressing the Command + F2 (or Command + Fn + F2) nothing happens. HELP!

You should read the current version of Target Display Mode (Target Display Mode) Apple is pretty clear what will and will not work. Your 2020 MacBook will not work. No there are no work arounds. It is time to forget about Target Display Mode and purchase an external display, one of similar screen quality to your 2012 iMac should only cost about $100-$125. If you are in the US, please try Costco.com

Is there a reason why? Are there any alternatives here? This is an awful user experience.

First, you are asking other end users here, not Apple. Apple does not share reasons with anyone here.

Second, the Terms of Use we all agreed to follow in signing up do not allow discussion of Apple policies, procedure, or moderator actions.

We can quote history. Apple began the deprecation of Target Disk Mode in late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in Early 2020. It was dead technology.
