I have sold my Apple Watch but the new owner cannot get into it

Does anyone know how to remove device from account. I went into my iCloud and removed device but the other person said that a message keeps coming up to contact original owner. I have also gone to the watch app on my phone and it doesn’t say about the watch been connected to my iCloud so I really don’t know what to do if anyone can help
