I cannot access the diagnostics menu, as when I select a language, the machine reboots into the language selection again

I’ve tried accessing the diagnostics tool for my MacBook Air M1. It’s an impossible task, as although I’m able to get there through shutting down, holding the power button, holding command+D etc. Once it asks me to select a language and hit OK, it simply reboots and asks me to select a language ad infinitum. Never progressing into the actual diagnostic part of the process. Does anyone else have this issue? Any fixes?

I’m running the latest Big Sur.

thank you.
