Playing FLAC audio files in lossless?

I have music I created as FLAC full resolution audio files on my iCloud Drive. When I download from my iCloud files folder to my iPhone and play through my AirPods Max headphones, am I now getting lossless audio? (I already set my music settings to lossless over Wi-Fi, but it is not clear if this is only happening via Apple Music.)

How can I listen to my FLAC audio files in lossless on my AirPod Max headphones?

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, emiliew.

If we understand your post correctly, you'd like to listen to music from outside Apple Music with lossless audio. We’d like to help by providing some information for you. We see that you've posted from: About lossless audio in Apple Music This has the best information you're looking for.

  • "AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use Apple AAC Bluetooth Codec to ensure excellent audio quality. However, Bluetooth connections aren't lossless.

You can listen to lossless on an iPhone or iPad updated to iOS or iPadOS 14.6 using:

  • A wired connection to headphones, receivers, or powered speakers
  • The built-in speakers
  • To listen to songs at sample rates higher than 48 kHz, you need an external digital-to-analog converter."

Currently, lossless audio versions of songs are only available through Apple Music. Apple values feedback and suggestions on what you'd like to see change. You can leave feedback here:
