My MacBook air is running out of space and unable to download OS upgrades. What is the process of removing and transfer files to external storage to make room for upgrades?

I found an old thread on storage space, in which you usually reply on (it seems). Would you still recommend "OmniDiskSweeper" to clear up storage space?

macOS Big Sur 11
OmniDiskSweeper doesn't seem to work on macOS Big Sur.
If you have previous versions of macOS installed, it may work
