Trying to update software. Screen with Apple logo and status bar frozen. Suggestions on how to complete update?

Update what ? Is this the Security Update 2021-003 (Catalina). If Yes, suggest restarting the computer in Safe Mode and choose the appropriate method Intel or M1. It will perform a Repair Disk, clear cache file and only load Apple Software - load slowly, Normal. This may or may not allow the update to proceed successfully.
Notation - This is the High Sierra but user profile showing running Catalina.
If the above is not what was being done - details please what was being done / installed.
Tried restart to update software. Screen showing Apple with status bar frozen overnight. Tried turning computer off and then back on with same result.
