Freezes at start-up after a basic update

So I accepted the offer to "update". Computer restarted and is freezing on the Apple logo with progress line below which freezes.

I saw the comment to redo the update but how is that possible when the computer is frozen? When I go into recovery mode I don't see the option to update.
