To begin with, have a look at the printer list in About AirPrint - Apple Support. There are both older and newer models. With an AirPrint-enabled printer, you would not have to install drivers, providing that printer and computer are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). Determine what kind of printer you need, then check that this printer works with AirPrint. AirPrint models are supported by macOS, but can be used with iPhones and iPads as well.

Drivers/software from a printer manufacturer may or may not add functionality. USB connections will require drivers, with a few exceptions (also see the above article in fine).

Your Looking All In printer or Only Printer ( Colour or Black & White ) ?

I like the hp Envy series. My inkjet prints and scans just fine via airprint. I don't have the new iMac yet, but it works fine on Big Sur.
