I am trying to restore system software (mountain lion) and no disk appears to install it on?

A restricted sign appeared on attempted startup. I followed the directions to repair disk via disk utility. All appeared OK. Then I tried to reinstall system software. I got through all the initial steps, but when I was asked what disk to install OS X no options appear. Any ideas?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.4

Hi Rudyboy2,

We see you came over from the article If your Mac starts up to a circle with a line through it. You were certainly in the right place for what you were experiencing. Since you're not seeing your disk as an option to complete step 4 and reinstall OS X, check to see if the disk is unmounted. This article should help: Mount a volume that's been ejected using Disk Utility on Mac.

If it's already mounted, restart your Mac and try the reinstallation again. Should the behavior continue, we recommend having the hardware checked out. Contact Apple Support for service options using this link: Get Support.

Cheers!
