Apple Music Lossless format crashes CarPlay and kill it for good

Ever since I enabled Apple Lossless format in Apple Music, my CarPlay would crash while playing music and refuse to connect again. Restarting the car wouldn’t fix it but somehow, after awhile, it will fix itself if I “replug” the phone back into the cable.

As a temporary fix, I disabled lossless in Apple Music and deleted all downloaded music files, then download them again in the old AAC format.

so far in the past few days, CarPlay hasn’t crash yet. It used to crash couple of times daily.

anyone encountered this issue?

I would really want to have lossless enable again as I can hear the differences in my 13 speakers system in my car.

Anyone find a fix yet?

Hi there, paradox888! Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are running into some issues with CarPlay and lossless audio. We definitely understand that not being able to enjoy your audio in that format can be a concern and we'd love to help. We’d like to gather a bit of information to look into this further.

  1. What specific vehicle (year, make, model) are you using?
  2. Which iPhone and iOS version are you using?

Also, we’d advise trying the following troubleshooting steps which may help with this behavior:

  • Verify there is no case on the iPhone that might be causing interference, affecting how the lightning cable seats or that might be between the iPhone and stereo USB connection (e.g. a battery pack).
  • Forget the stereo from Settings > General > CarPlay > [stereo name].
  • Forget the iPhone from the settings (stereo user guide for instructions).
  • Rename the iPhone in Settings > General > About > Name.
  • Reset network settings on the iPhone.

Please let us know if you have follow-up questions about this issue, or if the issue remains unresolved. Have a great day!

  1. Thanks for getting back with us about this issue, paradox888. We appreciate you taking all those steps. Let's try a few other things to make sure we can resolve this issue with you.

  1. Make sure you have the latest available version of iOS installed.
  2. Restart the iPhone and the CarPlay vehicle together, then retry.
  3. Enable Airplane mode in Settings (not Control Center) and try to launch the app.
  4. Navigate to Settings > Music and toggle off 'Show Apple Music' then test again.
  5. Sign out of Settings > [Name] > Media & Purchases and test not signed in.
  6. Delete the Music app then re-download and test.

If any of these steps make a difference, please let us know. Take care!

Same issues as OP, even after taking the troubleshooting steps described by Apple.

Additionally, my whole family (9x iPhones) has experienced problems with Lossless audio playback. With downloaded lossless audio files, there is a chance that your song will crash the Music app at 15 seconds. I don’t know why 15 seconds is an issue, but it’s almost always 15 seconds into the song. Some songs play without issue, others will crash the Music App every time (the soundtrack to Disney’s “Frozen” and “Frozen 2” have severe issues with successful playback when downloaded in lossless).

When the song initially stops playing, it is possible to skip to next song (whether in CarPlay, listening via HiFi compatible headphones, etc.) if you catch it right away. If you do not skip out of the crashing song, the Music app itself crashes to a force close and must be restarted.

In CarPlay, the order of crashing is as follows: Song stops playing, Siri stops responding, CarPlay crashes and force-closes leaving the car stereo to state, “iPhone is not responding. Please try again later.”

This issue does not occur when playing standard AAC songs.

iPhones affected (all updated and running iOS 14.6): iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro.

Hardware affected: Beats Studio 3, Apple AirPods Max, Apple HomePod, Apple AirPod Pro, Apple HomePod Mini, CarPlay compatible vehicles (whether over cord or wireless CarPlay).

iOS Music app settings are attached as screenshots.

Hi Sterling R,

Thanks for the reply.

The car is 2016 Mercedes B Class with Harmon Kardon COMAND system and Apple CarPlay.

We have iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS Max and iPhone X, all tried with the same problem.

We use standard Apple cases and original apple cables, so no problem with the connection. Moreover, the connection has been the same before and after Lossless audio was enabled. So we can isolated into the problem being lossless.

I tried what you mentioned on my iPhone X and still having the same problem. :(

What else can I try?

Thanks!

This is happening to me too, I try to playback any lossless album and after a few seconds playback stops, CarPlay crashes and my iPhone gets disconnected from my car stereo. After this, the only way to make it work is to unplug the cable from the stereo, wait a few seconds and plug it in again.

also this has not happened to me if I play a Dolby Atmos song, but I'm not really sure about it

My configuration:

iPhone 12

iOS 14.6

Car: Suzuki Swift

Same problem here too. 2019 Jeep Cherokee. I was an hour into a 3 hour trip on the long weekend, in the middle lane on the highway, on my own, when it just died. I had to find the USB end, unplug then plug back in to get it working again. Because I was on my own, I can’t say for certain it was a Lossless version that caused the problem, but it was starting dongs, then after 15 or 20 seconds, it would give up & skip to the next song in the que. Really annoying, not to mention unsafe. No hands free phone either.

Hi,

I have had the same issue since loseless audio has come out. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and a iPad Pro 2021 that have the same issue. I have had my CarPlay crash in my Audi SQ5, my Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes GLS 450, and the list goes on lol. I have used multiple phones (friends’ iPhones) to see if I could replicate the issue. It seems to be either the song will stop abruptly at 15 seconds and absolutely destroy my CarPlay or will crash in between songs. Additionally, this isn’t happening just over CarPlay but is also happening when I am using my Bose headphones that have never had an issue until now. Quite a let down when I am on a 8 hour plane ride and I cannot listen to any music. There is obviously something messed up with the new update and the bug needs to be addressed.
