How to export 120fps video in fcpx

It appears 120fps export is not available. I would like to be able to shoot 120fps and export in the same. Can this feature be added in fcpx?

Thanks

As Tom said, this feature is not available in FCP.

Can you tell us more about the projects you want to do in 120fps?

Usually, the only reason to capture at such high frame rates is to take advantage of all those extra frames for extra smooth slow motion. Not much devices can actually playback at 120fps and the human eye for sure cannot discern between 60fps and 120fps, so for actual distribution of finished videos there would be no benefit.

On the other hand, depending on what types of editing you want to do, and if you really want 120fps, Motion does allow creating of 120fps projects. I love Motion. Motion is an amazing motion graphics application and companion to FCP.

You CAN use Motion as a video editor, but it can quickly become messy. Still, it is an option if 120fps is the ultimate goal (which, again, I have trouble seeing why).

Well, I don't know how this will work, but here is a crazy thought that you may be able to try out if you have Motion (remember, I said crazy...)

Edit in a 60fps timeline and use Automatic Speed to make sure that all the frames in the original clips are used (you will be editing as if everything is slowmo at 50% speed, because er... it is).

When finished, export a full ProRes movie at 60fps.

Open Motion, create a 120fps "Motion Project" with the appropriate duration, add the 60fps exported from FCP and change its timing in the Inspector to 200%.

You may try with a small edit and see if this is feasible.

I will second Luis' method. It works. There will be no loss of frames. Just make sure you set the project length in Motion to the correct (frame count or timecode) length before you re-export. Motion does not do this automatically. [Project length can be adjusted at any time. It's not necessary to start the project with the exact time length of your video.]

[It only matters to whom will edit the video next as to which codec you select for export — anything better than ProRes Proxy will do, which includes (Master export) H.264.]

In FCPX, you can drop your 120fps footage in an empty project with *Automatic Settings*. FCPX will automatically create a 60p project.
