iCloud Drive file management for Mac

In system preferences > Apple ID > iCloud, what does the checkbox labeled “Optimize Mac Storage” actually do? Does it try to put the whole iCloud Drive on your Mac when it is checked or unchecked? What happens in the opposite scenario?

If it is not checked there will always be a local copy of all of your iCloud Drive files on your Mac.

If it is checked, there will be a local copy of all of your iCloud Drive files if you have enough space of your Mac. If there is not enough space, then older copies of iCloud Drive files will be stored only in iCloud (no local copy).
