Oh I have two headless Mac minis one running High Sierra and the other running Big Sur. I want to encrypt their drives however when I reboot I am not able to initiate screen sharing in order to log into the computer. I must attach a keyboard and monitor. Is there a way that I might be able to do that?

There is now an option to delay it x number of minutes with -1 means never, ie. wait until a manual or automatic restart:
fdesetup authrestart -delayminutes -1
Just what I was looking for. Now if I can put it in the startup sequence....

Thank you, hcstas. One drive is in the process of decrypting and the other is still encrypting. Once I have tested it on both machines, I will follow up here. I wonder if I knew how to put that command in the startup sequence, that it would allow it to automatically unlock the volume the next time it reboots.

Yes, it works. My read was the same. However, whenever I have tried it, it restarts the machine immediately. You enter the command, it asks for a sudo password, you enter the login UserID, enter the users password, and it restarts immediately. Good if I initiate the restart but not good if I am out of town and the machine reboots on its own.

My read is that it takes permanently until manually reversed. Your take will be the only one that counts…good luck.
