IPod

I tried to sync my new ipod with my laptop - hoping to only sync iTunes. It started to download lots of other files. Now I have the following message when I turn on the iPod: Data recovery cannot be completed. Please restore your iPod from backup." I can't find the iPod on the laptop. I am completely lost. Can someone point me in the right direction?
