X missing on the last web page in Safari

I was always able to close down the last webpage I was browsing with an 'x' at the top left of the open page. Now the 'x' is missing and although I can go back to my start page, it doesn't feel as though I have left the webpage. I see the tabs and can close all of them except the last page. I hope this makes sense!

Just click the red button at top left. This will close the page but not quit Safari.
