Connect Apple Thunderbolt Display using an external cable. Does it work?

Consider that I connect a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display with a Mac mini (late 2014) with the integrated thunderbolt 2 cable and at the same time I connect the Display with a Mac book Pro (2019) through the display's thunderbolt 2 port (using an external thunderbolt 2 cable plus a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adaptor).

The concept is:

If I wish to work with the Mac mini, Mac book will be disconnected.

If I need to work with the Mac book, I will connect Mac book. (I try to avoid plugging/unplugging cables to the Mac mini). Perhaps Mac mini should be shut down, while I use Mac book.

Do you thing that this will work?

The reason I propose this complicated configuration instead of a KVM solution is because I cannot find a KVM in the market that has the required types of ports or guaranties that I can use it with proper adaptors. Not mentioning that the cost is 3 to 5 times more.

The Thunderbolt display can display video from its cable or its rear Thunderbolt port. If only one computer it turned on, it should not be necessary to uplug the other. You can probably have both computers on, and it will display from the first one on. Try it.
