Messages in iCloud not available as iCloud and iMessage accounts do not match

but they do!

I accidentally deleted an important iMessage conversation. I regularly back up my device to iCloud, so I did a factory reset and downloaded my most recent backup from iCloud. The iMessage conversation returned, but only messages from the last ~1 week were there (as opposed to nearly 8 months). I googled the issue and tried various things, including signing out of iCloud on all devices and restarting them. When I signed back in on my phone, it was no longer syncing to iCloud and I got the error "Messages in iCloud not available as iCloud and iMessage accounts do not match." I doubled checked, and they do match. I'm signed in with the same Apple ID.

Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive -> name@gmail.com

Settings -> Apple ID -> name@gmail.com

It's the same Apple ID. Please help! I don't know why my phone thinks there are different accounts being used. Thank you.

Hello Sarahfromcincinnati,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you're ultimately trying to restore an important conversation that was deleted from Messages in iCloud. We'll do our best to assist.

Messages in iCloud is meant as a syncing service, but not to backup or restore conversations. It syncs your conversations like Contacts, Calendar, etc. through iCloud to all associated Apple devices. If you deleted the conversation on one device, it should delete that conversation from other devices, which is expected behavior: Store messages in iCloud

If iCloud and iMessage aren't working together, we would recommend to sign out of both and then sign back in. You can do this in Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out, this should sign you out of iCloud. Then sign back in and try to re-enable Messages in iCloud in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Messages.

Should it persist, we'd recommend to Contact Apple Support

Hoping this helps out, take care!
