MacBook Air suddenly searching for a wireless mouse I don't have !!

Each time I go to use my MacBook Air it tells me it's searching for a wireless mouse and / or keypad which I don't have. This means there's a delay as it eventually realises I don't have one.

I press command Q but that doesn't stop the delay while it searches - in vain !!

Why would this suddenly have started happening
