iPad keyboard is appearing at the top or centre of the screen

This is regarding iPadOS 14.6.

For no apparent reason, the keyboard on my iPad has begun appearing sometimes at the top of the screen and sometimes in the middle, but never at the bottom where It normally appears. I tried turning the iPad off and then restarting but that made no difference. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
