RAM filling

I am using a 2019 iMac using Big Sur and previously, Mojave. I updated to Big Sur in an effort to resolve an issue I have with my RAM filling for no good reason. At the moment I am running Excel and Word with Mail and Finder and the balance of my ram is 892Mb out of 8Gb. If I free it up using Clean My Mac I end up with 3.3Gg. After a bit of usage, without opening and additional apps, the problem will re-appear.

What is happening?

This is normal and the OS working exactly as designed. Your Mac is programmed to use all the Ram - what's the point of having Ram you don't use? It's managed dynamically, so that if an app needs more Ram then the other data there is moved out. So there is no problem. There is no solution required.

As for CleanMy Mac: an excellent example of how installing an app like this actually prevents the OS from working as designed. Dump it.

Hi Swampymac,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

First, don't ever use CleanMyMac or any other anti-virus or cleaning apps. They are junk to Mac computers and are considered malware.

I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful App to and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Navigate to: https://etrecheck.com and get the free version of EtreCheckPro.
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app. It is often recommended here on Apple Support Communities.
  3. Open EtreCheck, and before running the report, be sure to check “Allow full Drive Access” at the bottom of the EtreCheckPro window.
  4. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211. We will then examine the report for issues in your Mac.
