Flickering on external monitor

I have an 18 month old macbook Pro which I use with a 12 month old Acer monitor. Connection is through an HDMI cable to an adapter. Since upgrading to Big Sur, I am suffering from screen slippage and bad flickering on the ACER monitor. Unplugging the HDMI cable seems to solve it temporarily but it is happening more frequently.

My OS is up to date and I can't see a particular issue with the display settings.

Any suggestions?
