iwatch 6 as a stepper without Fitness+

I have an iphone 6Splus with the most up do date ios, will the iwatch 6 work with it. Do I have to purchase Apple Fitness to use the watch as a stepper. I am a senior

Apple watch doesn't measure steps by default,it includes a running total like this;

To measure your steps you would need a 3rd party pedometer app from the app store.

Yes the watch will work with your 6s plus,The fitness app is installed on the phone when you pair the watch.

And I don't know what a stepper is.
