Final Cut Pro X keeps crashing

Hi,

As soon as I open FCPX, the software crashes. I don't have time to do anything and it closes automatically. I've rebooted, deleted preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled nothing seems to work. I am disappointed as Apple products usually work seamlessly. Now I feel I'm on a Windows computer. Any hints on how I can resolve this problem?

Thanks

It's possible. Doing a test with a new library and using some videos from other origins may help confirm that suspicion.

I seem to remember a while ago someone else having problems also with OBS recorded videos.

You can try converting these videos prior to importing: you could use the Finder (control-click, Services->Encode Selected Video Files), or HandBrake, for example.

If the converted videos show no problem, then it is almost certainly something in the way the videos are encoded by OBS.

I am not very familiar with OBS; there may be some settings you change that produce a recording that is more palatable to FCP.

That would be a better way going forward, if possible.

I’m in a project editing. I did further research on forums yesterday and I stumbled on something that worked. Basically, it’s something that went wrong with the project I’m working on. I don’t know what but the guy said to open FCP and quickly do ALT + A to select the whole project and delete everything. I did that and now I am able to work again without crashes. It’s weird because I don’t know what causes FCP to crash. I’m just editing 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ok so I transcoded the OBS mp4 file to H.264 2160p, I imported the file to FCP (1,91 go file), no problem at all. The import takes seconds, I can edit and no lag. I tried to import the original OBS mp4 file (3,41 go file). The import takes forever, can't edit, massive lag and upcoming crash.

Clearly, there is something with the OBS files. I'll switch to Quicktime tonight for recording and come back with an update. I hope to God I found the problem.

I see that Mail is using a lot of CPU. This may be just a coincidence, but it is unusual.

FYI, I recently got a very unstable computer (iMac 2013, Catalina 10.15.7, FCP 10.5.2) crashing or slowing down without any obvious reason. In particular the mail application was close to impossible to use and was hugging my CPU. Re-installing applications, FCP, etc... and Catalina few times didn't help. I had to reformat the SSD disk.

Scary enough (may be that was a blessing in the end!) my Time Machine recovery (as well as Migration assistant!!!) didn't work and hanged over 2 days to no avail... In the end, I managed getting all - or close to all - backup data manually back. I keep my fingers crossed, and I hope your problem isn't as bad as mine was/is.

Good luck!

Hi Tom,

The same problem came back even after I completely rebooted the computer. I am loosing my mind. Everything has been fine since I bought this computer 3 months ago but this week has been a nightmare. I spent almost 3 hours on the phone with Apple support yesterday and they haven't been able to solve the problem. I need FCP X to function as it is a tool I use on a daily basis for my work!!!

Thank You

Here is my computer Specs:

 iMac (Retina 5K, 27 pouces, 2020)

    iMac Modèle: iMac20,1

    3,3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 (i5-10600) unité centrale: 6-core

    40 Go RAM - Possible de l’augmenter

OS: Big Sur 11.4

FCP version is 10.5.3

Here is the Etrecheck Report:

I did change de region but it keeps crashing. I've done the whole thing, rebooted from zero, reinstalling FCP and it keeps crashing for no reason. I took a screenshot of the FCP Error Report. Does it gives any clues on what causes the problem? I can access FCP but when I am importing a file converted to proxy it crashes. When I import a file without any transcoding the software is so slow that I can't playback. The beachball keeps rolling. FCP X used to work properly on my brand new computer with high volume 4K files. Now it's impossible to work. I'm out of solutions and in full despair.

Yes it is the complete report. I ran it again and here's the result. I don't understand why Mail would use a lot of CPU as the app is closed. The main problem now is that FCP X crashes when I try to upload a transcoded version of my video and it became unbelievably slow when I work with original files.
<Etrecheck Report.log>

Did you try removing *all* your accounts (including iCloud account if you have one) from the Mail application? Close Mail.

Then create a new admin user and from there reconfigure one by one your email accounts and see if Mail looks more stable. See if you can start FCP from this alternate user account.

If nothing helps, after having reformatted you system disk, you may have a HW problem.
