I cannot delete a chess app I have on my Mac.

I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of this app. I do not know why it would not go in to my trash can. I opened up the activity monitor and force quit the app, I put in in AppCleaner which it removed the files for it, but not the app. I restarted, turned off and on my Mac, but nothing. Every time I move the app to the trash can/folder a grayed out symbol (🚫like this but gray) appears under my cursor. Can someone help me out with this?

Hi Dibbeh,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

First, AppCleaner is junk and should never be used.

Secondly, if you are referring to the built-in Chess app by Apple, it cannot be deleted from your Mac. It must stay installed.

No. An App deletion app is not needed. After you delete an app, startup in Safe Mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support, and you're good to go!

However, every now and then, there may be parts of an App leftover you must remove. When this is the case, I only use Find Any File.

Any apps that are installed as default by the macOS cannot be deleted from the mac.

The default Apple apps are on the Macintosh HD partition of your drive which is set as Read Only

and cannot be modified, added to or deleted by you the User.

Chess uses very little space on your mac, so what were you hoping to achieve.

I had no idea that there was a built-in chess app in Mac OS. I thought I downloaded it. I just wanted to get rid of the apps I don't use anymore, and thought it was weird that I could not delete it.

Why is AppCleaner junk, and what is a better alternative?

I didn't know it is a default app, I thought I downloaded it.

I just wanted to get rid of apps I don't use anymore, and thought it was weird I couldn't delete a chess app.

When you use an app such as "AppCleaner" to find related files to an app, important files unrelated to the app might be included in the deletion resulting in a mess.
