Why are iMessage tapbacks suddenly repeating the entire message?

Hi,

Used to be that the tapback just posted the appropriate emoji on the original iMessage bubble. Now they say "so and so" liked/haha, etc and then repeats the entire message. So when people (maybe several in a group thread) tapback on a message, the message is repeated over and over (and over and over) in the thread.

This seems to be a new behavior and is true on iOS and on my macOS computer.
