Help upgrading TimeMachine to handle Big Sur upgrade

I'm running Catalina on a 2017 iMac. I back up to a 2 TB TimeMachine Base. I want to upgrade to Big Sur but I keep reading I have to reformat my TimeMachine. Are there any instructions on what I need to do to TimeMachine to resume backups after the upgrade? I'm assuming I upgrade to Big Sur without a backup safety net. Hope it goes well......

Hello, 168kenn.

Regardless of what you've heard, no, you do not need to reformat your TM backup drive when you upgrade to Big Sur.

"Time Machine still supports backups on Mac OS Extended format (Journaled), Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), and Xsan formatted disks."

Please see- Types of disks you can use with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support:

So before you upgrade to Big Sur, make sure you have a complete and current TM backup of your Mac as it is before you start.
