There are other commercial tools available for making copies of files and folders, such as SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, Chronosync. Most require payment to use (or the free version is very limited). One advantage of these commercial tools is that the copy of the folder is visible and files are accessible directly in the finder, as opposed to Time Machine which is really best used via the Time Machine interface. So with these commercial tools, you could connect your external drive to another Mac and see all the files in that dropbox folder there.
