Erase content from iPhone 6

Attempting to reset phone for disposal. Get error message unable to verify Apple ID. I’m on cell data not wifi. I’m wondering if I connect to wifi with old phone will iCloud attempt to synchronize old and current phone, which I don’t want.

It takes about 30 minutes and I get a pop up message: Verification failed. There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server.

the only option iOS to select OK. And I’m back at the General - reset screen to start over again. I’m wondering if I can’t connect via cell data and need to be on Wifi. Which leads me to my question “if I get on wifi will iCloud attempt to update my other phone, which is newer”

Settings - general - reset - erase all content and settings. Then I have to enter my passcode, then my verification password, then confirM I want to erase. Then enter my Apple ID, press erase. Nothing seems to happen but when I check back later, there’s a message saying Apple ID cannot be verified. Googled it and Seems to indicate phone cannot connect to Apple server. Before I connect this phone to wifi and try again, I want to make sure it won’t attempt to synchronize my new phone as this old phone is very out of date.
