Lost mode will activate once the iPhone is switch ON and has Internet connection.

so until the iphone is powered on, it is untraceable and the only other option we have is to erase.
Erasing is basically resetting the iphone and the stolen iPhone can be used again by new possessor of the iPhone

we did go to Apple support, we made a police report, deactivated phone line so I believe we have done what we can
I was mainly concerned about the lost mode. It seemed to be in limbo.

As long as the phone is activation locked and you used a passcode on the device, don't erase it. No one will ever be able to use the phone. EVER. You may not get it back. But it's worthless to anyone else.
