The server gave an error during download: 500 Internal Server Error

I am trying to update a hand-me-down 2014 MacBook Air to Big Sur and keep getting the "The server gave an error during download: 500 Internal Server Error".

I have tried safe mode, restarting, signing out and in of App Store, different times of day, different wifi networks, and nothing seems to work.

I have tried installing an older version of macOS but those also give the same error.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I had the same problem with a Macbook Pro, 2015. Wiped my drive, reinstall left me with Yosemite 10.10. Tried App Store, got 500 Internal Server errors on all available versions. Also tried 10.11 and 10.12 from .dmg. They'd say that they upgraded the OS successfully, but didn't actually do anything.

Several posts complaining of similar issue, so I chatted with support.apple.com this morning (from my phone, 'cause Safari wouldn't load the website). Solution was to use the Internet Recovery Option by booting and holding Option-Command-R (3 keys). That provides the option to reinstall Big Sur directly. About an hour later I was good to go.

Usual disclaimers - YMMV, backup before attempting, ... If you don't succeed, talk to support, they were very helpful.

If running any of the below - suggest resolving them before attempting the Big Sur Error 500 Error message.

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation. They may also interfere with the connection to Apple Servers to download Big Sur
