How can I use Disk Utility to fix my problem when I can't start up the Mac? I get the Apple log and progress bar but startup never completes. This page:

Boot into recovery mode:

Intel processor: Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image: Command (⌘) and R.
Then continue to follow the instructions.
Can you restart into the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup)? If you cannot then you have a hardware issue and need to take the computer to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be professionally diagnosed.
Thank you for the suggested solution. I did do all the repairs I could with Disk Utility but still can't get the Mac to start up. I may have to reinstall the operating system from a bootable flash drive.
