iPhone pro max to MacBook pro

when I airdrop a portrait mode pictures taken with iPhone pro max, it will not open on my MacBook Pro ….I emailed it to myself and when I try to download it it won’t work either …help

Go to Settings/Photos and change the format to Most Compatible. I suspect that High Sierra is too old to recognize HEIF format images.

macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.1

i left for a couple of hrs and left it…we’ll see if that helps? These are the 2 msgs I get.

It is set on “automatic” automatically transfer photos and videos in a compatible format.
