BootCamp support software installer causes bluescreen at "Apple USB Virtual Host Controller"

Hi,

I've recently been trying to get BootCamp to work on a external SSD following this: https://9to5mac.com/2020/07/14/install-windows-mac-external-ssd-drive-boot-camp-2020-video/

However, when i get to the very last step, which is manually installing the BootCamp drivers, Windows will bluescreen at "Apple USB Virtual Host Controller" with the following stopcode: "DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION". The BSOD will be stuck at 0% unless i force power-off the machine.

My question is:

How do i fix this?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.15

Installing Windows on an external disk is not officially supported. If you really must have it on an external disk,

  • either install Windows on the internal disk first, and then clone it, or,
  • use Win2USB.

The BSoD is because your external disk is connected using the controller and driver that you are trying to install. Under normal circumstances, with the internal disk, the connection to the boot disk is not a USB.

The problem i'm having is that CloneZilla's guide sends me to another program.
However, that program does not see 1. The Internal Bootcamp partition and 2. It does not see the correct partition of the external drive.

If the CloneZilla Live USB does not have the appropriate drivers, you may not be able to see the internal disk. What is the year/model of your Mac (do not post the serial number)?

For the record, these were my steps i tried when installing it, leading to the post:

  • Virtual machine on internal disk, drag bootcamp support folder and Win2USB in
  • Connect drive and connect win10 iso file with CD/DVD
  • Install Win2USB using CD/DVD option
  • GPT for UEFI,
  • Installs...
  • Turn VM off.
  • Enter macOS recovery to change startup options
  • Boot into Windows from macOS recovery
  • Use external mouse to complete setup
  • Install Bootcamp Drivers (fails)

I'll try installing the Bootcamp Drivers before Win2USB..

Alright, so this is what i do: (https://clonezilla.org/liveusb.php)

  • I do this from Windows
  • I already have a partition (250gb to Time Machine, 250gb to the Bootcamp partition, formatted ExFAT, so the one i have to boot from)
  • I put the contents of the zip file in the drive (partition)
  • On the USB drive, i create a shortcut to the makeboot.bat file
  • I make it run as administrator.
  • I then run the shortcut makeboot.bat?
  • I then follow onscreen instructions.
