External Mic Too Loud/Sensitive - iPhone 11 Pro

I purchased an external lavalier microphone for my iPhone 11 Pro to record interviews, but am experiencing problems. The audio that gets sent back is too loud, or too sensitive. Any time the person who is mic’d up projects their voice or raises their volume even slightly, the audio gets fuzzy and clips.

The issue is assuaged by moving the mic further away from the speaker, but that sort of defeats the purpose of the lave mic, doesn’t it? It should be able to clip to their shirt/collar without a problem.

I’m wondering if there’s any way to adjust the microphone’s volume/sensitivity on the iPhone itself, or if I need some other solution.

The lave mic is by HEHOTTC, it is connected to the iPhone via a dongle and is a TRRS.
