Being asked to verify Apple ID email address - Error Message

When I log into iCloud.com on a desktop, I'm met with a message asking me to verify my Apple ID email address. I type in my email address (which is an @me.com address) and I'm told: "This email address is not available. Choose a different address."

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I've never once had this issue in 10+ years of having this Apple ID and email.
