If you are connecting this WD device directly to your iPhone's Lightning port, then the issue is that this device requires more power than what your iPhone can provide it. A "My Passport" would be an external USB drive. These are bus-powered and would draw its power from whatever it is connected to.
... and, if this is the case, you would need to use a powered USB hub between your phone and the drive to make this work.
