My sons have had the same apple id for years. There are now older and my one son would like his own apple id. How do I go about changing his apple id on his phone while leaving the other phone on the existing apple id. If I just go into the edit for the apple id and remove his phone from the account will this erase info from his phone and how do I set his existing phone up on another apple id
One of you'll keep the current one as his own. Other person signs out of the Apple ID on all their devices (Settings > name > Sign Out > Sign out of Store and iCloud) and chooses the option to keep content on the device, if asked, then they will create their own Apple ID and sign into it and turn on their preferred iCloud options again.
Lastly, make sure both ID’s are part of the same Family Share group. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088
