I have migrated from a macbook pro to a macbook air both using latest OS and both with same size hard drive. If I download a program to install I get the message that the disk us full. However on checking the storage I find the hard drive is only half full. Had no problem with macbook pro.I have tried repair and discontinuing time machine and all methods described under this topic but to no avail. Any further help would be appreciated.

Over the weekend I decided to erase the disk and reinstall the OS plus my data. This worked well, though it took a long time doing backups, etc. This also has had the desired effect. I don't get a disk full message any longer and I can install new programs.

I've never seen this before, I see disk0, disk3. & disk4, but no disk1 or disk2 ???

Let me see what Disk Utility>Partition shows for that whole drive...

Run this command in Terminal & copy & paste the output please...
diskutil list
Shall I delete disk 3 and disk 4 and see if it solves the problem?
Are there other drives connected?
That is where other disk1 to disk5 or more would be.
Is your boot drive full?
No other drives are connected.
Not sure how to answer about the boot drive. Not sufficiently knowledgeable about it but about 50% should be free for data as I have only half in use.
I think you're going to need an external drive to install to to really figure this out.

Can you install a fresh OS to it so we can boot from that & easily look at the problem drive?
